Little is known about the history of the Clemens family. The family first appeared in the records of Tredyffrin in 1839 when George Clemens purchased a farm with an eastern boundary of North Valley Road from Adam Rickabaugh. The 1873 atlas shows a sawmill on the Clemens property.

There is a parallel between the Clemens and Jones families in that a George Clemens (possibly the father of George Clemens of Tredyffrin) lived in Pikeland in the 1790s.

There is also a suggestion that the Clemens were Mennonites, but there is no mention of the Clemens in the history of the Yellow Spring Road Mennonite Meetinghouse or any Clemens gravestones.
