On the 24th day of the 9th month, 1776, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting for Pennsylvania and New Jersey appointed a committee to regularly meet and take account of Friends who suffered loss for their refusal to pay the substitute tax or to enter military service during the present war between His Majesty's government and his American colonies.

Monetary values are quoted in old money (before the Revolution) and present money (Congressional issue). Substitute money was the tax to be paid if one did not serve in the military or provide a substitute.
