SOUTH MOUNTAIN AUDUBON SOCIETY
MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING
March 6, 2014

The Board of Directors of the South Mountain Audubon Society (SMAS) met on March 6, 2014 at the Adams County Agricultural Center at 4 P.M.

President Deb Siefken called the meeting to order with the following board members present: Nancy Locher, Mike O’Brien, and Linette Mansberger.

 

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Deb Siefken reported that she has submitted the annual report for 2013 to the National Audubon Society.

 

SECRETARY’S REPORT
Linette Mansberger presented the Secretary’s Report for October 8, 2013.  No additions or changes were suggested to the minutes.

UPON MOTION DULY MADE, SECONDED AND CARRIED
  Resolved that: the minutes from the October 8th board meeting be approved by the board.

 

TREASURER’S REPORT
Due to a home emergency, Mike Bertram, Treasurer, was not able to provide a complete Treasurer’s Report for today.  Copies of the updated report will be emailed at a later date.

It was noted that the yearly deposit from National Audubon Society was received in the amount of $621.25, an estimated balance is $2443, and we are awaiting the proceeds from two years of the “penny a pound” birdseed sale from Agway.

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Programs:
          March 10 – Charlie Skopic and Paul Kellett speaking for the Adams County Watershed Alliance

          May 12 and June 9 – To be determined

          September 8 – Jeri Jones, a York County Nixon Park naturalist, presenting “Your Backyard Geology” and highlighting some local areas of interest

          October 13 – Andy Wilson, professor at Gettysburg College, speaking about the 2nd PA Breeding Bird Atlas, of which he was an author
                  
Publicity:
          No report

Field Trips:
          Field Trip Chair, Mike O’Brien, reported on the February and March fieldtrips.   The February field trip was canceled for weather-related reasons.
The March trip to Middlecreek Wildlife Management Area on March 12th may have to be canceled due to remaining ice and snow.

Newsletter:
          Newsletter editor, Mike O’Brien, will prepare the spring newsletter and include a reminder about the April luncheon.

Membership:
          No report

Education:
          No report

Conservation:
          No report

Hospitality:
          Deb will provide refreshments for March and Nancy will provide refreshments for May.
OLD BUSINESS
CBC Fundraiser:  This report will be postponed due to the absence of Mike Bertram.

Members’ Favorite Birdwalks:  The first walk in November was a success with 11 people in attendance.  A March walk will be planned, weather permitting.  A number of people have agreed to lead walks and some will be planned for April and May.

Election of Officers:  This will take place at the March meeting.

NEW BUSINESS
Annual Luncheon:  The Annual Luncheon will be held at Hickory Bridge Farm in Orrtanna on April 12th.  The cost of the meal, including tax and tip, is $17.00.  The speakers will be Karen Lippy and Deb Kline presenting “Views from our Kayaks.”  The menu will be chicken and biscuits and baked ham.  Deb will arrange for centerpieces to be donated and nametags to be provided.  It was decided that door prizes are not necessary.  Reminders to sign up will be shared at the upcoming meeting and through the spring newsletter.

Hog Island Workshop:  Scholarship money is available for this program from the National Audubon Society

Day Trip to New York City:  York Audubon Society is organizing a day trip by bus on Thursday, May 8th, 2014 to birdwatch in Central Park and view the original paintings of John James Audubon in the New York Historical Society Museum.  The time is 6:00 A.M. – 10 P.M. and the cost is $106 per person.

After a brief discussion, it was decided that plans to attend the PA Audubon Convention in Wellsboro in September will be determined at a later date.

The next meeting of the SMAS Board will be at 4:00 on May 5, 2014 at the Adams County Agricultural Center.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 4:40 PM.
