Friends of the State Line Serpentine Barrens
Board Meeting – July 12, 2013

Attending:   Bob Gray, Rose Chase, Henry Whitesel, David Ross

Decisions

August Board Meeting

David will check with Anna Hull, Kent Wagner and Mike Walz to see if either August 19 or 20 from 7:30-8:30 would work.

Public Outreach Coordinator

We had previously agreed on attempting to raise the visibility of the Barrens and our organization this fall, centered around the AmeriCorps project, the Chrome trail rededication on September 8, and the Goat Hill Hike on October 6.   To that end, we approved a job description of the Public Outreach Coordinator for Mike Bertram to post on the Web site.   David will ask Anna Hull if she will take this on for an interim basis.  Rose is happy to partner with her, if Anna will take the lead.

AmeriCorps Planning Conference Call

Bob will contact Molly to confirm July 24 for the planning conference call.

AmeriCorps Revised Schedule

In light of the new dates received from AmeriCorps (8/3 – 9/12) and revised travel plans for members of our group, we developed the following schedule expanded to allow more flexibility for indoor activities when it rains.

Aug. 3 – Molly and Henry (others?) for welcome at NCP – timing depends on AmeriCorps arrival

Aug 5 – Mike Bertram will lead orientation for New Texas
            Work days:  5-9,12

Aug. 13 -- Henry and Joe will lead orientation for Goat Hill
            Work days:  13-16, 19-20

Aug. 21 – Kent and Bob  will lead orientation for Chrome
            Work days:  21-23, 26-30

Sept. 3 –Henry and Jay will lead orientation for Nottingham Park
            Work days:  3-6, 9-12

Sept. 8 – Trail Opening Celebration for Community at Chrome:   Invite landowners, DCNR, PPFF, TNC, press

Sept. 11 or 12 Thank you picnic at NCP (depends on AmeriCorps travel plans)

Planning for Chrome

Henry will request from Joe Frasetta copy of the electronic versions of the Rose Trail brochure

Kent and Mike Bertram are responsible for working with TNC to merge GIS layers to create trail map.

July 24 meeting will try to pin down whether AmeriCorps will produce the final layout for the brochure or whether we need to complete this in-house for TNC or Elk to print.   Someone needs to write brochure copy to fit Rose Trail template.

Kent will contact Molly to confirm the text of property boundary signs to be mailed to Henry with current phone numbers for Elk and TNC.   Kent to estimate number of signs needed.

Kent to use his GPS data to determine length of trail that we want to mark & number of trail intersections hence obtain counts of
Number of each color blazes we need
Number of trail signs for intersections

Confirm that trails are named Laurel Trail and Chrome Trail

Servicing Equipment

We need a repair shop willing to a) sharpen blades before August 3 and around August 21 and b) give us quick turn-around time on repairs.

Henry will check out two candidate shops; David will approach Angie Lobb about Camerons.

Rainy Day Activities

Space
NCP shed, but not table saws available.
Henry will ask Pal about space and equipment

Brochure
Need to line up adequate computer if AmeriCorps will produce this

Need lumber pre-cut for  deck of the bridge

Paint Chrome trail flashings
Bob Gray will contact Bob Barker determine how much flashing he has at hand; thus, determine how much additional flashing will be needed

Create trail signs – because of the number of trails that criss-cross
Bob Gray will contact Bob Barker to discuss format and other details related to trail directional signs

Logistical Needs (details to be worked out July 24)

We assume 8 AmeriCorps volunteers; need to adjust this list  if number of volunteers is larger or smaller

Need to obtain and deliver adequate fuel for chain saws, brush whackers, bush hog
TNC to provide 1 bush hog

Request 7 additional brush whackers from TNC
Request 7 safety sets (helmets with protectors and chaps
Request 1-2 chain saws if we have any certified AmeriCorps operators

Obtain herbicide and applicator.   We assume Kent is now certified to apply herbicide.

Bob Gray is accumulating list of needs for Lower Chrome bridge.
