Chrome Activity Report for 9th April 2014

Title: Workday Report FSLSB Chrome Barrens 9 April 2014

Attending: 10 volunteers from PHLY Insurance led by Thea; plus FSLSB volunteers Henry Whitesel, Mike Waltz, and Kent Wagner; plus TNC Volunteer Coordinator Molly Anderson.

Location: Lower Chrome Serpentine Barrens Area 3 & 4.

Accomplishments: Weather was just about perfect and we all had a fun, great time. We started at 1000 and ended at 1500. We parked at the Media Mennonite Church at the corner of Media Road and Barren Road. From there we car pooled down to the corner of State Road and Reisler Road where we parked on the pull off owned by Robert Gregg (Sr).

The 11 PHLY Insurance volunteers cut green briar, invasive small trees, and other brush from Area 3 with loppers and bow saws; they also pulled the smaller red maples, cedars, pines, and Russian olives with weed wrenches. Kent cut the same kinds of invasive trees and brush from Area 4. Mike Waltz cut trees that had fallen into the units and the larger trees that had grown up on the borders of the clearings. Molly and I supervised and cut with the loppers. The trees and brush was loaded onto tarps and dragged into the woods off site.

We had lunch on Bob’s Bridge that FSLSB and AmeriCorps constructed last summer. A picture of most of the volunteers is attached (picture by Henry Whitesel). It’s true; we are having great time.

I give a special thank you to Thea and the volunteers from PHLY Insurance for attending this workday and helping us to recover clearings 3 and 4. We hope to get caught on all maintenance activities at the Chrome preserve this year and these special events greatly contribute to our effort.
