Nottingham County Park Activity Report
for 10th May 2012

In attendance: Henry Whitesel, Mike Waltz, Jonathan Keith, and Emery Abdel-Latif. Ranger Wes McCoy sawed all day with us too.

Accomplishments: Our work today was in support of clearing the area in preparation for a prescribed burn later in the year. It was a great day to be working outside; sunny and warm, but crisp. We drove to the work area, entering the park off Ridge Road. We cleared small trees and cut stumps down to ground level. Henry and Ranger McCoy were the sawyers. Mike Waltz cut green briar with a brush whacker. And Jon and Emery carried the tree parts to the edge of the trails. In this particular area, the briars seem to be competing very well with the Serpentine grasses, and are crowding out the grass in some places. But right next to where we were cutting was a beautiful grassy area, showing the habitat we are creating.

Jonathan Keith joined us as new volunteer. Jonathan will be working with us an intern this summer. Hopefully, and together, maybe we can work out ways to attract more volunteers.

We need help from you-all, the "Serps Crew" also. I ask you to talk us up with your friends and people you know. Encourage them to give us a volunteer day. The pay is good: a day outside, a pleasant tiredness at the end of the day, and helping the native serpentine plants find a place to live and thrive.

Issues: None. .
