I used to visit Harold and his wife with my mother. They lived in a small council (public housing) bungalow in Consett. Harold worked for the Consett Steel Co. He seemed to have a weakness for gambling. Horse racing was often on the TV. He was a very good chess player, at county and country level. He was still playing top board for the local chess club when he was 90. (Mike Bertram)

 

Chess: won3, drawn 2 against Alekhine, won Durham county chess championships, and the brilliancy prize in Correspondence (letter from Harold to David Thomas) .

 

When his wife died he moved into a home as he could not take care of himself. Then he married somebody in the home.

Harold owned 3 butcher's shops in England. Sold them and (due to currency transfer restrictions) sent the proceeds to his brother in the US for safe keeping. His brother invested the money in the stockmarket and then lost it all in the crash. The family emigrated in 1929. Harold bought a butcher's shop in Nanaimo and eventually owned a pub/hotel. He got out of the butcher's business when the first supermarket (Saefways) arrived in town and he realized that he could not compete on price.
