Lancaster Pike and Main Avenue, Berwyn, looking east

image not foundDescription: Looking east in this 1904 Lucy Sampson image, at the intersection with Cassatt Avenue, shows the macadamized Lancaster Pike running through Berwyn. The first observable building at the southeast corner of Main and Lancaster Avenues was used as the Berwyn Post Office and a grocery store. The building still remains, more recently as Connor’s Drug Store, and in 2014, as a short-term rental property. The building immediately to the east is the bank, and on the north side of the Pike can be seen Fritz Lumber, remarkably similar to today’s appearance. Next to the bank, with a big veranda and stairs, is the Bee Hive Store. The proprietor had been Isaac Cleaver, a local Civil War hero who served in the 97th Pennsylvania Infantry. The Panic of 1893 made it increasingly difficult for people to pay their debts, and at the turn of the century, Cleaver filed for bankruptcy and left Berwyn.
