On the 24th day of the 9th month, 1776, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting for Pennsylvania and New Jersey appointed a committee to regularly meet and take account of Friends who suffered loss for their refusal to pay the substitute tax or to enter military service during the present war between His Majesty's government and his American colonies. Monetary values are quoted in old money (before the Revolution) and present money (Congressional issue). Substitute money was the tax to be paid if one did not serve in the military or provide a substitute. The following Tredyffrin residents appear in the committee minutes: Daniel Maule8th month, 1777. Daniel Maule of Tredyffrin Twp, Chester Co., suffered loss of one good blanket, two large pewter dishes, 11 plates and 3 dollars cash, supposedly worth in total £10, seized by John Marshall, collector, to satisfy demand of £3.10 fine for not associating. 6th month, 1778 Daniel Maule of Tredyffrin Twp, Chester Co., suffered loss of 12 or 13 shillings old money and £1.12 congress money, valued together at £2.17, seized by John Lloyd, collector, for Provincial Tax. 8th and 9th month, 1778. Daniel Maule of Tredyffrin Two, Chester Co., suffered loss of a saddle, leather britches, a great coat (almost new), bedding, raw wool, cash in silver and a milk cow, all together worth £15.6.8½ in old money or £68.14.5½ present money seized by David Briggs and Jeremiah Eardly by order of Lewis Gronow to satisfy demand of £55 substitute money. Samuel Richards1777 Samuel Richards of Tredyffrin suffered the loss of two good blankets, a tow sheet, and two yards of flax linen, all valued at £3.3.6, seized by John Maxwell to satisfying a tax of £3.10 for not associating. 1777 Samuel Richards of Tredyffrin suffered the loss of a good blanket and an old blanket, together valued at £1.15, for the use of George Washington's army. Abel ThomasAbel Thomas of Tredyffrin Twp, Chester Co., suffered loss of £26.12.6 in Continental money seized by David Briggs and Jeremiah Eardly by order of Lewis Gronow for Substitute Money. Jacob WalkerJacob Walker of Tredyfrin Twp, Chester Co., suffered loss of £55.5 in Continental money seized by David Briggs and Jeremiah Eardly by order of Lewis Gronow for Substitute Money. Joseph WalkerJoseph Walker of Tredyffrin suffered the loss of a horse worth in former times £22, but now valued at £120 Continental money, seized by David Briggs and Jeremiah Eardly by order of Lewis Gronow for Substitute Money. Lewis Gronow who ordered many of the seizures also lived in Tredyffrin. He was appointed sub-lieutenant of Chester County in 1777, was a Colonel in the Militia, and was a member of the Chester County Association, which was chaired by Anthony Wayne. Between 1778 and 1781 he was a member of the General Assembly. |
