Goat Hill Activity Report |
for 23rd November 2003 |
In attendance:Pete Price, John Schmidhauser, Marilyn Schneider, Joan King, Ruth Galantino, Kay Davies, Pete Brown, Keith Darlington, JoAnn Puccella, Lynn Carroll Accomplishments: Removed pine and cedar from the lower grassy area just above the creek. We cut more than we could drag, so there is more dragging to be done at some point. Lynn actually cut down 2 trees, hooray. We flagged and left a few small cedars, because Tim Draude told Kay that the olive hairstreak needs them for a host plant. Saw 2 sleepy salamanders and a bunch of jumpy little field mice. Also saw some serpentine chickweed clinging to a bloom, which I'll send pictures of when I download them from the camera. Special thanks to Jim Dudley for showing me around earlier last week, so I knew where to work. Issues: One really big pine (50-60+ yrs old?) was cut down, which in retrospect we probably could have left. Perhaps we should identify a few trees as "grandfathered in" by virtue of their veteran status. Suggestions for enhancements: A chipper would be nice... Reporter: Lynn Carroll |
