Volunteer Activities


Volunteer Positions

The Friends are in the process of documenting the volunteer roles.  The following are draft descriptions of some of the roles.  It is difficult to estimate how much effort is involved in each role. There is considerable flexibility on the time involved and it depends on the interests of the volunteer.

Maintenance Activity Leader

PURPOSE:  To manage the maintenance activities of the Friends of the State Line Serpentine Barrens

SPECIFIC DUTIES OF A VOLUNTEER:

·         Help schedule maintenance activities.

·         Manage maintenance activities.

·         Introduce new volunteers to the maintenance tasks and safety procedures.

·         Coordinate activities with the restoration activity leader.

·     Write up workday activity reports

·     Maintain contact with volunteers

·         Serve as an advocate for the Friends of the State Line Serpentine Barrens and the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation.

QUALIFICATIONS:

·         An interest in the Serpentine Barrens

·         Interest in restoration and maintenance activities

·         Skilled at interacting and negotiating with people at all levels of organizations

·         Be committed to volunteer on a consistent basis


Public Outreach Coordinator

PURPOSE:  Raise the visibility of the State Line Serpentine Barrens and of our Friends group

SPECIFIC DUTIES OF A VOLUNTEER:

·         Use Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation resource material as a jumping off point for connecting with local / regional organizations, public and private entities and media outlets

·         Coordinate with Hike Coordinator,  and Maintenance and Restoration Activity Leaders  to increase the exposure of the FSLSB’s activities and events.

·         Identify contact information for local / regional organizations, entities and media outlets

·         Serve as an advocate for the Friends of the State Line Serpentine Barrens and the PPFF.

QUALIFICATIONS:

·         An enthusiastic interest in the Serpentine Barrens

·         Communication skills

·         Be committed to volunteer on a consistent basis


Restoration Activity Leader

PURPOSE:  To manage the restoration activities of the Friends of the State Line Serpentine Barrens

SPECIFIC DUTIES OF A VOLUNTEER:

·         Schedule restoration and maintenance activities.

·         Manage restoration activities.

·         Introduce new volunteers to the restoration tasks and safety procedures.

·         Coordinate activities with the maintenance activity leader.

 Geographical Information Systems Analyst

PURPOSE:  To manage the GIS resources of the Friends of the State Line Serpentine Barrens organization

SPECIFIC DUTIES OF A VOLUNTEER:

·         Manage the Friends GIS resources

                ·         Undertake GPS data collection as necessary

·         Create maps as required by the Board

                ·         Serve as an advocate for the Friends of the State Line Serpentine Barrens and the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation.

QUALIFICATIONS:

·         An interest in the Serpentine Barrens

·         An interest in GPS and GIS technologies

·         Skilled at interacting and negotiating with people at all levels of organizations

·         Be committed to volunteer on a consistent basis


FSLSB Hike Coordinator

PURPOSE: To organize hikes at the State Line Serpentine Barrens

SPECIFIC DUTIES OF A VOLUNTEER:

·Organize and publicize Fall hike and others as opportunities arise

·Identify and coordinate with experts in areas such as ecology, flora, geology, ornithology, and local history who would be willing to lead hikes

·Serve as an advocate for the Friends of the State Line Serpentine Barrens and the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation

QUALIFICATIONS:

·An interest in the Serpentine Barrens

·Willing and able to participate in hikes

·Be committed to volunteer on a consistent basis over a timescale of a number of years

MENTOR: Mike Bertram


FSLSB Plant Monitors

PURPOSE: To help monitor the plant populations at the State Line Serpentine Barrens

SPECIFIC DUTIES OF A VOLUNTEER:

·       Help with annual plant monitoring focusing on the scraped areas of Chrome and Goat Hill

·        Participate in other plant monitoring efforts

·        Serve as an advocate for the Friends of the State Line Serpentine Barrens and the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation

QUALIFICATIONS:

·An interest in the botany of the Serpentine Barrens

·Willing to participate in plant monitoring activities

·Be committed to volunteer on a consistent basis over a timescale of a number of years
