The Pool Book indicates that John was one of the herdsmen who 'occupied' Herd's Close at the tiem of the 1774 election, but that he also owned freehold property in Alnwick, which entitled him to vote. There were only 250,000 individuals who met this requirement in all of England and Wales before the Refordm Act of 1832, so John should not be thought of as an improverished shepherd. - Neil Strong

Residence Notes:

Probably Alnwick Moor herds house.

'Land on Alnwick Moor was enclosed so that revenues "should be augemented for the good of the town". It was then divided into "parcels" of varying sizes, and let by the Burgesses to "such person as they think convenient". At Herd's Close on the edge of town, a house was ordered to be built for a "herd" or herdsman who was allowed to "Enclose a Close" for his own use as part of his salary". - from Alnwick Museum (Bailiffgate Museum) - Neil Strong

From the Newcastle Daily Journal 5th January 1884:

ACCIDENT TO THE BELFORD AND WOOLER COACH

SEVERAL PERSONS INJURED.

On Wednesday night last, an accident of alarming nature occurred to the Woller and Belford omnibus near Chatton Park Hill. Whilst Bertram, the driver, was descending the hill the pole of the bus broke. Near Dr Marshall's house there is a rather sharp turn, and at this point the vehicle upset, and nine passengers who were inside and four who were outside were all more or less injured. The horses, however, kept their feet, and were about to make off when one of the passengers, less hurt than the rest, got hold of the horse's heads, and thus prevented what would inevitably have been loss of life. Medical assistance was at once telegraphed for, and Dr Day was early in attendance. Dr Marshall, the Rev J. A. Roberts, Mr George Ord, and others were also present, and rendered every assistance. Some of the passengers were for a little time in a state of unconsciousness, but they were carefully looked after at the house of Mrs Forrest. They all so far recovered as to be taken to their various homes, with the exception of Mr Bertram, who was severly injured, and had to be remvoed to the Percy Arms Hotel. He, however, recovered consciousness on Thursday evening, and was yesterday enabled to travel to Wooler. All the other passengers are progressing favourably, and Mr and Mrs Fitzgerald deserve every credit for the unremitting attention to those who suffered through the mishap.

From the Alnwick Gazette:

January 5, 1884

COACH: On Wednesday while Mr Bertram's coach was coming down Chatton Park Hill, the shaft on his brake snapped, and not-withstanding every effort made by Mr Bertram to keep the horses going forward to avoid a 'smash' on taking the first turn at Bates House, the sudden turn upset the coach, which is a covered one. There were thirteen passengers besides luggage; the horses were not thrown over, and but for the presence of mind of a young man from Lilburn Gardens, the consequences would have been very serious as it was all the passengers got severely shaken, and several had cuts and bruises.
