Residence Notes:

Mary Lunn nee Robson lived in a cottage in Harbottle after her sister Marjory's death in 1826. She may have also lived there before Marjory's death. Mary's son James Lunn paid the rent on the cottage.

The land on which the cottage sat was orignially part of Harbottle Common which was enclosed in 1817. The Duke of Northumberland received this land as part of the enclosure. The means that the cottage dated from 1817 or later.

James Lunn also rented a further 5 acres of land on which Harbottle Fair took place annually. He continued to rent the land after Mary's death in 1836 until his death in 1849. The reason he did so is not clear.

This interpetation is based on documents, c. 1850, from the Northumberland Archives concerning the property.

Alderman James Lunn Dead

Alderman James Lunn, of Newcastle, died yesterday at his residence in Moor Crescent, Gosforth, after a week's illness. He was 81.

A builder and contractor, Alderman Lunn, a brother of the late Sir George Lunn, was senior partner in the firm of James Lunn and son, of St Mary's Place, Newcastle, but he was probably best known on Tyneside as Chairman of Newcastle United Football Club.

He became a director of the club in July 1896, was chairman from 1909 to 1911, and again from 1929 until his death.

On the City Council he did valued committee work. He became a member of the Council in 1909 and an alderman in 1927. He was sheriff in 1922. Alderman Lunn was Chairman of the Royal Arcade Building Society, Newcastle, steward of the Bricklayers' Company of the Newcastle Freemen; and a circuit steward of Brunswick Methodist Chapel.

Football Career

A. Ernest Bertram is included in 'All the Lads', a book about Sunderland players (page 40). He signed for Sunderland for the 1903 -4 season, but only played one game, against what is now Manchester United. The prior and subsequent seasons he played for South Shields.

Frank Twedell (sp?), Tel 01325-352276, is the author of a book called 'The Definitive Darlington F.C.'. The book lists the Darlington English Cup teams from 1885 to 1908 (after which Darlington turned into a professional club). Bertram played in the 1907 - 8 season (4 cup matches) and the 1908 - 9 Season (2 cup matches) but he does not appear either earlier or later.

There is also an article out of the Northern Echo for October 1908 descibing Bertram's return to the Darlington side for a cup match against Hartlepool Expansion (Darlington won 4 - 0).

I was brought up in Kent, in Sevenoaks, where Mum and Dad still live, and went to school in Ramsgate. I studied at London University for a Degree in Geography before entering the Landscape Architecture profession. I did three more years of studying part-time at Birmingham Polytechnic whilst working at a private practice in London. I then went to work for a local authority in Suffolk for a number of years. In the mid nineties I decided to apply for a visa for Australia and subsequently lived for a short while in Perth. I returned to England to work for English Heritage for a couple of years. It was whilst I was with English Heritage that I traveled to Newcastle for the first time and made some work contacts. I subsequently worked in private practice for a short while before getting another job this year with Sedgefield Borough Council. I commute 25 miles each way every day (which I guess for you is a short commute!). I have just exchange on the purchase of a house in Low Fell in Gateshead and will be moving there mid January. So maybe I shall be settled for a little while. As you can probably guess from my commitment to work and travels, that I am single! - John Lochen, Dec 2001
