Lichtenfeld’s store

image not foundDescription: This Berwyn image of Lichtenfeld’s store was taken by Lucy Sampson between 1912-14 from the north side of the Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike (where Cassatt Avenue emptied onto the Pike from the bridge) toward the southwest corner of Church Street (today’s Route 30 and Main Avenue). Lichtenfeld’s was a general merchandise establishment, with an array of men’s and women’s garments and hats displayed in the left window, and paint and decorating supplies in the right window. Obviously it’s summertime, windows are open upstairs and there is no evidence of screens are there. The building remains today and most recently has been a restaurant, Main Street Café, at 660 Lancaster Avenue, though in 2014 the café is out of business. The tree immediately west of Lichtenfeld’s is today’s Berwyn Post Office. On the far left, across then-Church Avenue, the building that was shared by the Jos. W. Shank Groceries & Meats, and the Berwyn Post Office, became for many years Connor’s Drug Store and is today a rental property. - Herb Fry and Roger Thorne
