View from Devon Inn

image not foundDescription: This image, which Lucy Sampson took during the summer looking northwest from the grand porch of the Devon Inn, is shown on a postcard dated December 13, 1906. The road that bisects the image from left to right is Waterloo Avenue, Devon, and the intersecting thoroughfare is Berkley Road. The residence located at the center of the image on the northwest intersection of Waterloo and Berkley, with the beautifully fluted chimney, was referred to as the Tavenner home. The building was much later converted into a much larger office complex which stands in 2014 – still replete with that beautiful chimney. Most of the surrounding structures have been replaced. The large white mansion on the far horizon was Llangollan, the estate of Dr. Charles Thomas and his brother, on which Devon Manor Rehabilitation Hospital stands in 2014.- Herb Fry and Roger Thorne
