Description: From September 18-20, 1777, during the British occupation of the Great Valley which led to the Battle of Paoli on the night of September 20, 1777, Lieutenant General Wilhelm Baron Innhausen und Knyphausen, the commander of the Hessians [German mercenaries attached to the British Army], occupied this house at what is now 919 Contention Lane in Tredyffrin Township - then owned by Samuel Richards. Three months later, in December 1777, American General Woodford had his quarters in this house during the Continental Army’s encampment at nearby Valley Forge. The structure, deeply offset east of Contention Lane, is today a private residence, and the old barn still stands on the property. - Herb Fry and Roger Thorne
