Lancaster Pike at the Lower Bridge, Berwyn,

image not foundDescription: Lucy Sampson captured this bucolic image of “Old Berwyn” about 1904. Two young drovers herd several cattle on what was by that time called the Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike, and about to pass the stone abutments through the viaduct under the Pennsylvania Railroad right-of-way locally referred to as the “Lower Bridge.” This image faces west from today’s Lakeside Avenue, and faces Lincoln Highway near today’s Bagel Factory. One other interesting feature in this image is the tall windmill rising beyond the tracks which would have been adjacent to the Francis House, still found today in totally decrepit shape on Francis Avenue. - Herb Fry and Roger Thorne
