Lancaster Pike - Bridge Avenue and Paoli Road, Berwyn

image not foundDescription: Lucy Sampson was standing in the middle of the Lancaster Turnpike looking west. On the left is the intersection of Bridge Avenue. Across the intersection is a hay wagon wending its way on Paoli Road (the predecessor to the current Route 30 from Berwyn to Paoli), with Central Avenue intersecting one block on the left. The Pike turns to the right crossing the four tracks of the westbound Pennsylvania Railroad’s main line by means of the “Upper Bridge” on its way to Paoli. The unidentified buildings on the left hand side of the picture are approximately where, in 2014, Tires Plus Total Car Care is located on the south side of Lancaster Avenue at Bridge Street. The unidentified building with the three chimneys on the south side of the PRR tracks resembles a freight station, but contemporary maps make no reference to the structure. - Herb Fry and Roger Thorne
