Lancaster Avenue, Berwyn

image not foundDescription: In one of Lucy Sampson’s earliest known images, she had set her camera on the Philadelphia & Lancaster Turnpike facing west as the ‘Pike emerges under the Lower Bridge” at Warren Avenue in Berwyn. Behind the fence on the right would be built the American Bronze Company in 1907, which would make bronze bushings for automotive and aircraft purposes for a half-century. To the right can be seen the Springhouse Inn, built for drovers in 1804 upon the completion of the Lancaster Turnpike. Near the turnpike a deep, open pool of spring water refreshed passersby and gave the inn its name. Beyond the Inn to the right is a gingerbread-decorated building of the Pennsylvania Railroad, and prominently on the horizon, the Baptist Chapel on Cassatt Avenue. In the middle of the image, north of the Turnpike, the "Berwyn Ice Company" would rise in 1902, providing ice for refrigeration of fresh and perishable foods when electric refrigeration for homes was still well in the future. - Herb Fry and Roger Thorne
