Brookmead Farm

image not foundDescription: During the encampment of the Continental Army at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777 – 78, the general officers and their staffs were quartered in the homes of the local farmers. A Polish cavalry officer assigned to the American army, Brigadier General Casimir Pulaski, was briefly housed in the nearby home of widow Margaret Beaver. This was the farm where her Margaret’s 21-year-old son Devault shot an American soldier from the Encampment who was milking his cow. Devault’s defense was that he had previously complained to General Wayne about these thefts, and Wayne had told him to “Shoot.” The Beaver property later became known as “Brookmead Farm,$rdquo; as shown in this image taken in 1908-09 to the entrance of the farm by Lucy Sampson. What remains of this former dairy farm lies at 245 Walker Road - - on the north side of Walker Road west of Trout Creek. - Herb Fry and Roger Thorne
