Berwyn Station Pennsylvania Railroad, 1904

image not foundDescription: From the Cassatt Avenue bridge we see this 1904 Sampson image of the on the north-facing brick façade of the Berwyn station, built about 1871-72, and facing the P.R.R. tracks. At the west end of the building is a frame addition. In a similarly-facing 1888 image by Julius Sachse, this addition only extended on the ground level, but here one can see that a second-story has been added. That second floor extension would have provided station agent Samuel Kromer an extra bedroom for his family residential facilities at a time when part of his compensation included use of the building for family housing. The fence to keep people from improperly crossing the tracks from the station appears quite substantial … much more so than today. On the east side of the station can be seen a pump and water trough for horses. - Herb Fry and Roger Thorne. See also Julius Sachse biographical article.
