Berwyn

image not foundDescription: Taken in 1911 from the Cassatt Avenue Bridge which crossed the four tracks of the PRR main line in Berwyn, the image looks west on the highway officially known as the Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike just west of the railroad station. In the foreground to the left, on the land previously occupied by "The Central Cigars and Tobacco Emporium" is the new W.T. Yerkes Building, a real estate office in which the village’s Reading Room was also located. Farther down alongside the tracks, a postcard taken in 1905-06 distinctly shows a PRR switch tower directly in front of the small railroad building clearly shown in the 1908 image. Southwest from the Yerkes Building across the Pike is the R.C. Macon Cigar Store and News Room. In 1908 the Macon store, which stood at the intersection of Waterloo Avenue and the 'Pike,' prospered where the parking lot for Clay’s Bakery stands in 2014. Across Waterloo Avenue is the same building in which Clay’s stands today. The third building west, a white clapboard structure, is Henry Garber’s general mercantile store. - Herb Fry and Roger Thorne
