Trinity Presbyterian Church of Berwyn, Church and Berwyn Avenues, Summer 1888

image not foundDescription: What was originally called Trinity Presbyterian Church of Reeseville was completed in December 1862. When Reeseville changed its name to Berwyn in 1870, the name was changed to Trinity Presbyterian Church of Berwyn. Julius Sachse was facing southeast when he took this 1888 image toward the church which sat on the southwest corner of what was called Berwyn and Church Avenues. Interestingly, atop the steeple is not a cross but what appears to be a weather vane, which would tell you which way the wind is blowing. In 1891, three years after Sachse took this image, this sanctuary was razed to make way for a second, larger church, although parts of the original foundation were incorporated into the construction of the second church that still stands in 2014. The house seen across Church Avenue to the east was later occupied by Presbyterian minister Reverend Carroll Yerkes, who sold it to Trinity. Trinity is still the owner of that land, although the house has long since been demolished. - Herb Fry and Roger Thorne
