Trinity Presbyterian Church, Berwyn

image not foundDescription: Construction of Trinity’s second sanctuary began in 1891 with the razing of the 1862 church, and portions of that original foundation were incorporated into the new construction. This second sanctuary, as shown, was dedicated in September 1892, and captured by Berwyn photographer Lucy Sampson in 1904. The main entrance door of the new sanctuary can be seen at the base of the bell tower on the northeast corner. In recent years that door is practically unused, and the congregants enter their church from the west side parking lot facing Waterloo Avenue. In this image the tower had yet to be augmented with the four surrounding buttresses that were added in the 1920s to provide additional strengthening. Also, during the 1920s construction they replaced the wooden railings on either side of the stairs leading up to the entrance with stone walls on each side of the stairwell to provide greater protection. Easily seen behind the church to the south is the then-Berwyn Town Hall, and the Methodist Church on Church Avenue with its steeple and bell tower. - Herb Fry and Roger Thorne
