Varnum Commanding lst Regiment Rhode Island Infantry Colonel Christopher Greene 2nd Regiment Rhode Island Infantry Colonel Israel Angell 4th Regiment Connecticut Infantry Colonel John Durkee 8th Regiment Connecticut Infantry Colonel John Chandler DESCRIPTION - Granite with bronze plaque, 6 x 4 x 2. DONOR & DATE - The Valley Forge Park Commission under the jurisdiction of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, 1908. HISTORICAL DATA - This brigade of Rhode Island and Connecticut Infantry regiments included the lst Rhode Island Regiment which contained numerous free blacks. The Brigade Commander, General Varnum, was one of the more colorful and outspoken general officers serving at Valley Forge.
