A.M. Campbell jr., 87, ran Strafford Nursery

Alfred M. Campbell Jr., 87, of Bryn Mawr, a horseman and businessman who formerly operated one of the largest flower nurseries on the East Coast, died Monday at the Beaumont at Bryn Mawr Retirement Community.

From when Mr. Campbell was a young man, he and his father, Alfred M. Campbell Sr., operated one of the most successful flower nurseries in the area, Campbell & Son Florist Co. in Strafford.

In 1970, the business closed and Mr. Campbell retired.

Mr. Campbell served on the board of directors of the Philadelphia Flower Show, and was active with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and the annual show at the Convention Center.

Mr. Campbell lived most of his life in Bryn Mawr. He graduated from Episcopal Academy. He was a member of the Radnor Hunt and Hilltop Horse Show, and served on the board of directors of the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair.

Each year, he sponsored a trophy in his father’s memory at the Devon Horse Show and at the Flower Show.

He was a longtime volunteer at Bryn Mawr Hospital, and was a member of the Church of the Redeemer in Bryn Mawr and the Merion Cricket Club. He was a former member of the Corinthian Yacht Club in Philadelphia.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Alice V. Fox Campbell; two stepsons, Edward C. and William F. Dearden, and 10 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Church of the Redeemer, Pennswood and New Gulph Roads, Bryn Mawr. Burial is private.

In 2007 there was still the Philadelphia Flower Show 2007 - The Alfred M. Campbell Memorial Trophy for the most successful use of a variety of plants in a unique fashion. - MB
