Joshua Evans’ chair

This Chippendale chair recently exhibited in Malvern was originally owned by Joshua Evans, born in 1732, died 1817, founder and proprietor of the inn which he named Paoli, and from which the town derived its name, writes a contributor.

Joshua Evans was the son of William Evans, the immigrant who came over from Merionshire, Wales, and who purchased 500 acres of land from William Penn and settled in Paoli in 1719. He was one of the founders of Old St. David’s Church, Radnor in 1723. and his name appears in the first vestry of the church. He was also the political and military leader of the district He persuaded the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad (now the Pennsylvania) to change its route from the Valley so as to pass his door. He was Brigadier-General of Militia for many years and was elected Democratic Congressman from Chester county in 1828.

The chair descended to his son. William Evans, born 1769, died 1843, of Willistown township, and then to the latter’s daughter, Sarah Wistar Evans. born 1804. died 1897, who bequeathed the chair to her great-niece and present owner, Anna Evans Cutler. of Malvern, daughter of the late Hon. William Evans. of Willistown
