Mansion House at Valley Forge

1913.03.19 WC Star

Mansion House, Valley Forge
Stewart & Wolf, proprietors. Bushong
and Parke for remonstrance;
Gilkyson for license.
Chas. Hopkins testified that he saw
Chas. Seigman at this place. They
drank there together. Saw Seigman
fall from a chair outside the bar room,
cut his head. He was very talkative;
he had too much on board. Mr. Stewart
too care of him after he was hurt.
Never saw Stewart drunk, or drinking,
but had seen many persons, "half-shot"
about the premise. They went in and
out of the bar room. Often saw an
old soldier there; he was served and
he generally was "half-shot."
General B.F. Fisher testified that
license at this place is needed; that
he knows the place and proprietors,
who conduct a good house and an orderly
bar room.
Captain B.F. Bea;
Place is well
run, and license is needed. Mr Stewart
is a man of good habits."
M. Geist: "I am a merchant, License
is needed at this place, I pass
often. the place accommodates many
persons and teams. The proprietors
are fit persons to have a license. I am
there some at nights, and often in the
office, and the conduct is good."
Elmer Hiley: "The hotel is larger
than the old hotel. The lawn i used
for suppers, etc. There is a large automobile
trade. I have been in the bar
room three times since owned by
Stewart & Wolf. I live within 100 yards
of the hotel. I have seen no
drunkenness about the premises."
Charles Segman: "I was not off the
premises on the day of the accident in
September. I have seen others there
under the influence of drink. I saw
Mr. Stewart drunk on the 15th of September
He was behind the bar and
drank with the others. Mr. wolf did
not drink. There were ladies in the
bar room dring (during / drinking) at the bar. There were
two of them, one was Mrs. Stewart. I
was getting pretty drunk and don't remember
how many drinks the ladies
when I fell. I don't remember falling.
I don't know how I got the wound on
my head. I am very sure I was not
at the other hotel. I only had 67 cents
in my pocket when I left home and
would not go down there without
money. I would occasionally stop at
the Mansion House and then go to the
Washington House, but am sure I did
not that night.
