History of Ladies AuxiliaryThe Ladies' Auxiliary was organized in May, 1917. Mrs. Bertha Chattin became our first President. Louise Watson Delaney was Secretary and first Treasurer was Anna Hall. In the fifty-two years since organization the efforts of the Auxiliary have been concentrated on aiding the Fire Company and the Community. The Ladies of our early Auxiliary earned and presented the sum of $14,000 toward the building of the present Fire House, in 1929. In 1951, the Auxiliary purchased a Cadillac ambulance. This was a much needed service in the community. For many years a BELL, bought in the early 1900's and eventually placed on top of the present building, was used to alert the Ladies of the need for coffee and sandwiches for men at the scene of a fire. On occasion, the Ladies still perform this service, though the old bell has been replaced by a telephone. The Auxiliary's projects are financed by all the time-honored methods - suppers, sales, cake bakes, fashion shows, etc. The money earned from these activities has provided small equipment for use of the Fire Company as well as many large and small items for use in the kitchen and the hall. In January 1964, having received approval from the men of the company, the Ladies instituted an S & H Green Stamp fund drive. The purpose of the drive was to collect enough stamps and donations to enable us to acquire a new pumper for the company. With the aid from the men, all persons and businesses in our fire service area were contacted. The project required many months of hard work and cooperation. By the end of the drive, the community has wholeheartedly responded with S & H Green Stamps and monetary donations and the pumper went into service in May, 1965. As of 1969, the Auxiliary has one hundred and eighteen members. We have forty-two Honorary Members, included in our number, of whom we are especially proud. Being an Honorary Member means that these Ladies have given at least twenty years service to the Auxiliary, the Fire Company and the Community. A copy of the magazine was donated to the Tredyffrin Easttown Historical Society by Spencer Pyle. |
