Chester County Sheriff's Deeds

When a Court orders the county Sheriff to sell a person's property to meet a debt the Sheriff raises a deed poll to document the sale. The deed poll has the Sheriff as the grantor, not the person who owned the property. Usually the debtor is named in the deed poll and there is often additional useful information about the sale but the amount of information is very variable.

Before 1773 the deed polls are in the normal deed books. After that time seperate Sheriff's deed books were kept. The Chester County Archives has an online index for books 1 to 7 (1773 - 1875), go to https://www.chesco.org/1408/Sheriffs-Deeds-1773-1875

Family Search has copies of the Sheriff's deeds, books 1 to 5 (1773 - 1850). These can be found at https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/233378?availability=Family%20History%20Library (account required)
